The Centre is a physical embodiment of the concept of unity within diversity, a principle inherent in Romanesque architecture. It comprises seven concrete volumes of varying heights and dimensions, each representing a different exhibition space. The design is a contemporary interpretation of the diverse forms of Romanesque buildings, with each volume's ceiling mimicking a roof type used in this historical architectural style.
spaceworkers' design is not only visually striking but also interactive, encouraging visitors to engage with the exhibits to deepen their understanding of the Romanesque era. The building's central body, covered in glass, serves as a bright contrast to the darker exhibition spaces, enhancing the visitor's experience.
The Centre's construction pays homage to the past, using concrete, the modern equivalent of the stone and wood used in ancient Romanesque buildings. The wood-textured concrete facades echo the close connection that historical architecture had with nature. This design choice is a clear allusion to the past, yet it is executed in a way that is undeniably contemporary.
The Interpretation Centre of Romanesque is located in the village of Lousada, in the Oporto district. The project began in 2011 and was completed in 2018. The building's austere appearance initially caused concern among the local population, but since its completion, it has become a beloved landmark in the village.
The Centre's design is a result of extensive research into the Romanesque typology present in the region. The final design incorporates easily recognised elements of Romanesque architecture, allowing visitors to immediately associate the building with this historical period. The scale, light, and proportions of the interior spaces are also based on ancient Romanesque constructions, further reinforcing this connection.
The Interpretation Centre of Romanesque has been recognised for its innovative design, winning the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is granted to designs that reflect extraordinary excellence and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics. spaceworkers' design is a perfect example of this, as it not only pays tribute to the past but also paves the way for future architectural innovations.
